As we mentioned in previous articles during the last stage of the menstrual cycle normally a layer of endometriosis lining in the inside of the uterus is expelled, known as menstruation blood but instead some of the endometriosis tissues grow somewhere in the body causing endometriosis. Endometriosis also reacts to hormonal signals of the monthly menstrual cycle, building up tissue, breaking it, and eliminating it through the menstrual period. In this article, we will discuss what is electron beam tomography (EBT) in endometriosis ?

I. Definition

While traditional CT scanning technology, the X-ray source-point moves along a circle in space around your body to take images, electron beam tomograghy (EBT), the X-ray tube is large and stationary,electron-beam focal point is swept electronically along a tungsten anode in the tube with person to lie on the table while the scan is performed.

II. Procedure

The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes, and the actual scanning takes only a few seconds. No preparation on your part is required. While you lie down on a table under scanner with clothes on, when everything is ready, the scanner moves over your body and takes pictures of your abdomen. If there are some abnormal tissues, cysts or implants existence, the scanner will capture them in the pictures. During the scan, you will be asked to hold your breath to help for better images taking. A radio technician is present throughout the scan and will respond to any questions or concerns. Alter scanning, the images are read by radiologist and result will send to your doctor. If endometrial implants, adhesion or cysts are found, you doctor will notify for next options.

III. Risks

a) There are no known risk of EBT.

b) EBT is considered a safe test with minimal radiation exposure.

b) Since EBT is a very new medical technology. The risk of radiation exposure has not been determined, most insurance companies place an exclusion on their issuing policies.
